There were safer altenatives for medical iostopes.

I do not think AECL failed. I think Parliament has failed by voting against safety in the Chalk River reactor case. There was a time when safety was not questioned or overruled by politicians. There are apparently safe reactors in Europe that could have supplied the needed isotopes. Also this would not have been bomb grade uranium used as a source. I am afraid that most Canadians aware of this news item are not aware of the alternative choices that should have been made in my opinion.

One laptop per child

It may be seen as a way for big computer companies that helped with this project to make themselves seem good while they sell us electronics that get turned into high tech trash at rates exceeding 4 tons of e-waste an hour in the USA. But giving one of this laptops to a child in the developing world(including Afghanistan) makes rational economic sense for buying a laptop for the kids in your life too. Where else does 399$ US buy you a kid proof laptop for younger kids? You could buy a used older laptop I suppose. For the 399$ your kid gets a designed for kids laptop and then another one is donated to a kid in a developing country. Sure they need water and food more than a laptop. But buy someone a meal they eat for one day. Teach them to grow a meal they eat for life. The laptop can be seen as a tool for building communities. Visit www.laptop.org

Reducing web site.

It is a bit scattered but the goal is good. Visit this 90% less energy site started by two women to challenge themselves to set an example of stopping global warming Riot for austerity

Inspired I turned off two light bulbs and two computers, one printer and one network storage device and one hard drive. I also unplugged the power adapters for these devices if they had one so their transformers would not be idle and warm with electricity.

Three Amigos protests starting up.

We will be protesting the three Amigos meeting in Canada. When I say we I am speaking loosely as many protesters are not greens and many greens will not protest. Here is a blurb so you too can join "us".

NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION TO TARGET THE SPP!
AUGUST 10TH- AUGUST 16TH
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

August 20th is a continental day of action to oppose the SPP, a highly
secretive agreement between US, Mexico, and Canada. The SPP is essentially
NAFTA-plus-Homeland Security, firmly rooted within a colonial and
capitalist framework. There is no doubt that the SPP will bring greater
insecurity and misery: murderous wars and occupations abroad; border
militarization; increased detentions and deportations; attacks on
indigenous peoples, the poor, migrants, and working people; ecological
destruction; and mega-projects in the service of corporate greed.

Leading upto August 20th, grassroots groups and networks are organizing a
national week of action to target the SPP and those behind the SPP- the
corporate lobby behind the North American Competitiveness Council and
government bodies such as security insitutions and trade departements.

We strongly encourage other cities and towns to join us in this national
week of action, as well as to organize mobilizations on August 20th. For a
list of corporate targets visit: http://noii-van.resist.ca/?p=438

Our candidate has stepped down.

The candidate for Ottawa centre who we nominated this spring has stepped down. He needs to work on other projects such as a film and a government round table on the environment. We now need to find another candidate.

Development and corruption talk this evening

I attended a talk sponsored by engineers without borders University of Ottawa Chapter this evening. A Canadian International Development Agency employee, Shaukat Hassan gave a talk. Here is the blurb from their facebook event post where I learned of this event

Interested in learning how corruption is affecting Canada's development today? How EWB can play it's part in this fight? Or whether it should at all? Is corruption a post-imperialistic construction used as an excuse to target aid based on political motives? Or is corruption an overlooked challenge to development that can finally be addressed in a highly technical globalized era? Wondering what all this means for a socially conscious person like you?

Then Come on out to Development Drinks!

What: Shaukat Hassan, the Canadian International Development Agency's expert on corruption issues will speak on corruption and challenges it poses to development, and this will be followed by informal group discussion.

As background the EWB shared this article on facebook.

Article by Shaukat Hassan:

http://www.acdi.gc.ca/images.nsf/vLUImages/Journal_Of_Development/$file/journal-corruption-and-dev-chal.pdf

Shaukat Hassan recommended that EWB develop ethical guidelines and codes of conduct in other words a professional code of conduct for their voluntary efforts.

Iran and the nuclear question.

So it is father's day and I spent the day with my father-in-law and his family, our family. I read the newspaper here and notice that the Iran nuclear question and the Korean nuclear question is still in the news. I don't want nuclear power to spread but I am also not happy with imperialism and its left over nuclear powers that be. I also know Canada is not innocent on the nuclear question and we have invested in selling our Candu systems world wide.

Hello world of the web, welcome to my partisan green party blog

I have been blogging for about 4 years now. I typically don't blog about politics. I blog about in order of time spent on these blogs:
  • my school work,
  • my computer tinkering,
  • anonymously on a topic I won't share here,
  • about being a cybernetic citizen,
  • about music my partner and I make,
  • about a Friday night role playing game,
  • about community networking,
  • and I have a few blogs out there that are either no longer there, or are no longer used.

I am a minority in the blogging world as I am an adult male. I am a long time green party member and do some official work for the party too. I might add the Green Party of Canada but actually the Green Party is a global party so would it make sense to add a national boundry here? At any rate welcome to my debate er I hope not a ranting blog about green issues.
